Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

RIF Day is one of Mitchell’s most loved traditions!
Through our partnership with Reading Is Fundamental, every student at Mitchell Elementary gets to choose a free book to take home and keep.

📚 Important Note: While we are proud to partner with Reading Is Fundamental, the entire program is fully funded by the Mitchell PTA. Your support of PTA events, fundraisers, and memberships makes this program possible for every child at our school.

Quick Facts

  • Who: All Mitchell Elementary students

  • What: Free book giveaway through RIF, made possible by PTA funding

  • When: Twice a year (Fall & Spring)

  • Where: Media Center

How It Works

  1. Students visit the Media Center with their class.

  2. Each child chooses one free, age-appropriate book from a wide selection.

  3. Volunteers help students make their selections and write their names inside their new books.

  4. Students leave with a book they can treasure and read again and again!

Why It Matters

  • Encourages a love of reading: A book that belongs to them can spark excitement and confidence.

  • Supports literacy at home: Helps build home libraries and strengthens the school-to-home connection.

  • Ensures equity: Every student has the same opportunity to choose a new book, at no cost to families.

  • Funded by PTA: 100% of the books are provided through the generosity of Mitchell PTA and its supporters.

How to Support RIF
