Mitchell Elementary PTA General Meeting


Tuesday, March 3, 2015


Call to Order:


The General Meeting of the Mitchell PTA was held in the cafeteria on March 3, 2015. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Shannon Gittleman, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Ellen Russell and Ellie Shein, Mitchell second graders.

Reading and Approval of the Minutes:


A motion was made by Jenny-Ellen Russell to approve the minutes of the October 28, 2014 General Board meeting as distributed. The motion was seconded and passed.


Officer Reports:


President’s Report (Ms. Gittleman):


Ms. Gittleman began her report by reading a paragraph from the most recent Florida PTA publication regarding the purpose of testing and assessments. The passage related to the Florida PTA’s view that a valid assessment of a child should not be based upon one test score, and no one test should determine a child’s future. Rather, testing and assessments should help a school to identify how the school’s instruction and learning can be improved.


Ms. Gittelman also reported on the great success of the Centennial Celebration which was held on February 22. She thanked Ms. Sledge and Ms. McClarin for co-chairing this outstanding event. She reported that the K-2 Talent Show was also a great success, and thanked Ms. Roberts and Ms. Alvarez for assisting with that event.


Ms. Gittleman also reported that in the Fall after-school enrichment will be much more enhanced, with a lot more after school enrichment activities to choose from. The PTA is looking for people who are interested in helping with after school enrichment.


Ms. Gittleman also said that 5th grade events are coming up quickly. After school shout out ads in the memory book are still available, but need to be turned in soon to be included.


Ms. Gittleman also stated that the Family Outreach Committee is doing a great job this year. Spring Break survival kits were distributed to families in need at Mitchell and also to needy Metropolitan Ministries families.


Treasurer’s Report (Ms. Russell):


Ms. Russell distributed a list of items affecting the budget which need to be considered and voted upon by the PTA. She also distributed a Budget-to-Actual report.


Ms. Russell reported that the Centennial Celebration had impacted the budget in that there was both more revenue and more expenses associated with the Centennial Celebration than had been budgeted for. The PTA’s net expense contribution for the Centennial stayed the same, at $4,000; however, the New Budgeted Centennial Income was proposed to be increased from $3,000 to $7,600, while the New Budgeted Centennial Expense was proposed to be increased from $7,000 to $11,600. The motion by Kathy Hill to approve the proposed changes to the 2014-2015 budget as presented was seconded and passed.


Ms. Russell also announced that a list of the cash receipts and expenditures for the PTA is available to PTA members at any time. She distributed her e mail address and telephone number and said that she welcomed any inquiries and questions from any member.


VP of Volunteers (Ms. Bell):


Ms. Bell reported that the volunteer form is currently being revised to recruit new committee members. Also, several committee chair positions have been added. She reported that the PTA is looking for an after school enrichment chair, as well as a sponsorship committee chair. She encouraged any member interested in getting more involve to contact her or Ms. Sledge.


Standing Committees:


Centennial Committee (Ms. Sledge):


Ms. Sledge reported that our first ever Mitchell Movie Night was a great success. She thanked everyone for coming out and supporting it. She also reminded everyone that the Centennial Committee has placed a Mitchell Centennial Display at the Tampa Bay History Museum as a joint venture with Wilson Middle School. She thanked Sandy Fasulo, who worked very hard on this project and did a wonderful job. The Centennial Committee has one more project to end the year with, which will be a Mitchell time capsule.





Art Night (Ms. Shamblin):


Ms. Shamblin reported that Art Night will be April 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Parents will get to view and buy their children’s framed art work for $25, with all proceeds to benefit the art program. New this year we are starting Art Angels, in which a family can sponsor another family who cannot afford to purchase their child’s art work, for $25.




Nominating Committee (Ms. Gittleman):


Ms. Gittleman reported that a vote would be taken to elect the members of this year’s Nominating Committee, which consists of 7 PTA members who help to recruit new officers for the coming school year. She announced that the following PTA members have been nominated to serve on the Nominating Committee to recruit officers for the 2015-2016 school year: Lisa Woodward, Sandy Fasulo, Alisa Davidson, Shea Alvarez, Kim Bell, Amy Smith and Holly Waldron. A motion was made and seconded to approve these seven nominees and elect them as members of the Nominating Committee for the 2015-2016 school year.


Principal’s Report (Ms. Anderson):


Ms. Anderson reported that the Centennial Celebration was an amazing event from her point of view. She reminded everyone that coming up on Friday, March 7 is Field Day, and all parents are invited to come to Mitchellat 11:00 a.m. and have lunch with their children on the grounds outside.


Ms. Anderson reported that 4th and 5th grades had a writing assessment today, and that everything went very well. The kids are well prepared and so are the teachers.


Ms. Anderson also reported that registration for new Mitchell students for the 2015-2016 school year will begin on Monday, March 16, and she encouraged all PTA members to help get the word out to all incoming Kindergarten families that they need to register as soon as possible. We have been assigned six units of Kindergarten, so it may be a big year.


Ms. Anderson reported that Mitchell has asked to VPK, she believes we will get it but we are not sure yet. As soon as she knows, she will let us know.

No further business.   The formal meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m., followed by a performance by the Bobcat Chorus and the Strings, which ended at 7:30 p.m.
